Choosing a Counsellor or Therapist Print E-mail
A key ingredient of effective therapy is the relationship that you establish with your therapist. The therapeutic relationship is the crucible in which life’s problems can be resolved and change can be fostered, so choose your therapist with care.  Choosing should be guided by equal measures of intuition and information.  It is probably best to start with information; ask your potential therapist anything you need to know that will assure you of their suitability.  These questions might include any of the following:

• What training do you have?
• How much experience do you have?
• What experience do you have with my kinds of issues?
• Are you registered or a member of a professional association and if so which one?
• What is the code of ethics that you work within?
• How much do sessions cost?
• How long are sessions?

Along with your questions, notice how comfortable you feel with your potential therapist.  Bearing in mind the sensitivity that you may feel around the kind of things you will need to discuss, it is essential that you feel comfortable and not judged by the therapist.

Given the importance of what you want to do, be prepared to speak to a number of therapists before choosing.
